1822

In 1822 Gauss won the
Copenhagen University Award with his Theoria Attractionis, together
with the thought of mapping one surface onto another so that the two are similar in their smallest parts.
This paper was later published in 1825 and forwarded/extended his thought until
the 1940’s where he published a more complex book, Untersuchungen Über
Gegenstände der Höheren Geodäsie. This idea of mapping extending throughout his
career expending his horizon. He wasn’t only a praised mathematician, but now he
was also an established astronomer, prestige philosopher and an innovative geodesic
engineer.
