In 1799, Gauss went back to Brunswick so he could received the degree that he longed (and he did). After the Duke of Brunswick agreed to continue funding Gauss's stipend, he requested that Gauss was to submit a doctoral dissertation to the University of Helmstedt, which was also located in Brunswick. The topic of Gauss's dissertation was a discussion surrounding the fundamental theorem of algebra.
